After not enough sleep, we were on the way again! Another sunny day but had a huge sandstorm this morning as those of you watching on tv will have seen - games continued - Tui even played in it! But made us pretty dusty for the rest of the day.
Highlight of the day? Meeting DJ Forbes - NZ's captain - such an awesome guy and quite cute up close. I do have a pic as evidence but it's on Kalala's camera so will post it tomorrow. They had just played Kenya and won even though it looked shaky for a while there. We told him he'd given us a scare, he laughed and said they'd had one too and that they were nervous about playing England that afternoon. He also said England would have most of the crowd support so we promised we'd be as vocal as possible in our wee corner. In saying that, as it turned out, yes England did have an incredible amount of support but NZ were popular too.
However that leads to the lowlight of the day - we lost to England in the semi final - 21-19. They just ran all over us in the first half. We almost caught up in the second half - one missed conversion was what was needed to have drawn and gone into extra time. Gutted? We sure were. However we all got together and did a haka for them on our stand as they moved around the field thanking fans - they stopped and watched us - amazing feeling - everyone rushed to watch and I KNOW we were on tv!
We were a bit flat after that but swung into supporting South Africa in the final - they were playing England and there was NO way we were going to cheer for red and white. Thrilling final and South Afirica pulled it off in the last seconds of the game.
Sevens are great wherever they are but having the opportunity to attend the Dubai ones was amazing. So a huge thanks to Brent for organising so much of it - and thanks to all the kiwis I went with - real and honourary!
